The Best Home Made Chex Mix
NOTE: These “recipes” inspirational notions — not fully-developed or detailed instructions. Take the following with a pinch of salt!
If you’re obsessed with snacky, savoury, crackery mixes like I am, you have to try this homemade Chex mix / Bits n Bites / nuts & bolts… whatever. It’s my latest problem and I’m loving every handful.
Plz imagine the possibilities beyond this awkwardly bad food photo.
Preheat oven to 250F
In a large bowl, layer the following in this order (from most to least absorbent):
1 cup (heaped) Shreddies
1 cup Corn Chex
1 cup Cheerios
1 cup Goldfish
1 cup pretzels (broken in half so they’re similar in size to other components)
Combine in a small measuring cup:
1/4 cup salted butter
3 TBSP Worcestershire sauce
1 TSP garlic powder
1 TSP Cajun seasoning
1 TSP siracha
1/2 TSP seasoning salt
1/2 TSP onion powder
INSTRUCTIONS:
Pour wet mixture evenly over cereal mixture. Gently toss with a spatula until cereal is evenly coated.
Spread mixture over a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Bake for 15 mins. Remove from oven, stir, and bake for another 15 mins. Repeat these steps again for a total of 45 mins in the oven.
This low-and-slow method dries the mixture back out and gently toasts it to deepen all the flavours. Perfection!
If you love breaded chicken but CANNOT be bothered with the messy, multi-stage flour > egg > breading situation, this “recipe” is for you. The innovative hack is using ground chicken which allows you to actually season the meat, and skip straight to the breading!
